Hungary needed more than 2500 MW of imports during the historical maximum consumption period.

The first this year and the highest gross system load ever recorded was registered by MAVIR Hungarian Independent Transmission Operator Company Ltd. on 15 January 2025. According to MAVIR's certified data, a historic record of 7,503 MW was set between 11:30 and 11:45. The snowfall and overcast weather caused a significant increase in consumer demand, presumably with many people turning up the heating on their air conditioners and more people flipping on the light switches due to the extra light demand, as reported by the system operator in its Facebook post.

According to MAVIR's detailed data, at the historical maximum consumption period, domestic production was 4,913 MW, of which the Paks NPP contributed 2,054 MW, covering 27% of consumption. Solar power plants produced 368 MW, while wind power plants generated 38 MW.

At maximum consumption, Hungary needed more than 2,500 MW of imports – the two 1,200 MW units of Paks II will be able to meet about that much demand.

The amount measured on 15 January exceeded by 53 MW the previous national record of 7,450 MW, which was registered by MAVIR on 22 November 2024, according to the company's Facebook post.
