Péter Szijjártó: Our aim is to speed up the project

The project of building the two new units is transferred to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The aim is to accelerate the investment in Paks.

– The government is committed to work to guarantee Hungary’s energy security in the next four years as well – said Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, during the ministerial candidate hearing before the Parliamentary Committee of Sustainable Development. – Due to the recent events and the challenges ahead, the Paks II. investment will be the responsibility of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. János Süli continues work at the Ministry as the Secretary of State of the Paks II. Investment” – he stated. 

It was declared at the session of the Committee of Sustainable Development that the goal is to accelerate the investment in Paks, therefore the construction can be started in the second half of 2023, and the physical start-up of the two new units can be dated to this decade. This means a serious step towards self-sufficiency to the country. 

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade emphasized that the construction of the two new units of the nuclear power plant serves Hungary’s national security, national economy and national strategic interests. Nuclear energy is the most balanced, the most predictable and the cheapest energy source.
