This year, the system load record has already been broken twice in five days.

The Paks Nuclear Power Plant was a stable bastion of the Hungarian electricity system in 2024, as well. According to data published on the website of MAVIR Hungarian Transmission System Operator Company Ltd, 16, 016.6 GWh of electricity was produced at the Paks Nuclear Power Plant last year. This represented 47.1% of the total electricity production, meaning that almost half of the domestic electricity was produced by the four Paks units in 2024, as well.

Hungarian power plants produced a total of 34,011.6 GWh of gross electricity, but an additional 10,729.3 GWh of imports were needed to meet the electricity demand, which accounted for a quarter (23.98%) of total consumption.

The 35.8% share of nuclear energy in gross electricity consumption (excluding the production of small household-sized power plants) remained decisive. The share of Hungarian solar power plants was about a third of this, 12.7% gross, while their capacity was double the installed capacity of the Paks units.

Meanwhile, the all-time system load record was broken twice in five days this year. MAVIR recorded a consumption peak of 7,503 MW on 15 January  and 7,663 MW on 20 January.
