Gergely Jákli: We act as a responsible licensee
Gergely Jákli, Chairman and CEO of Paks II. Ltd., accompanied by Andrea Beatrix Kádár, Chairman of the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority, gave information to the members of the Sustainable Development Committee of the Parliament on 12 February in the Parliament. The participants heard a report about the preparation works taking place at the site of the new units and received answers in connection with the inaccurate and exaggerated statements and news reports published in the media.
The working pit did not collapse, but two corners on the prominent “peninsula” in the southern section broke off, affecting half a percent of the more than 700-meter perimeter wall. The southern wall section of the working pit is 3-400 meters from the building of Unit 4, and the incident did not affect the operating power plant at all. The condition of the wall section in question and its surroundings is continuously monitored, and both the authority and Paks Nuclear Power Plant have access to the data obtained in this way, Gergely Jákli stated.
He recalled that after the corner detachment on 30 January, Paks II. Ltd. stopped work, fenced off the area, recorded what happened in the e-log and began analysing the situation. The authority began its investigation on that same day. He added that they conducted a walk-through inspection with the responsible designer, the contractor, their own expert colleagues and engaged independent experts. As soon as the documentation is ready, the company will submit it to the authority.
We have no technical problem to hide, we are acting as a responsible licensee – Gergely Jákli emphasized, also pointing out that the groundwater and the technological water generated from the construction activities are present in controlled conditions thanks to the cut-off wall, in an amount corresponding to the size of the working pit and in a smaller amount comparing to the design parameters. He emphasized: safety continues to be the first priority in the decisions of Paks II. Ltd.
